Anatomy, Neuroscience, and Kinesiology Prerequisites

3-4 weeks

Build foundational knowledge in human anatomy, neuroanatomy, and kinesiology. Understand musculoskeletal structures, nervous system organization, and biomechanics as they relate to human movement and occupational performance.

OT Theories and Practice Models

2-3 weeks

Study the major conceptual practice models and frames of reference used in OT, including the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO), Person-Environment-Occupation (PEO) model, Biomechanical Frame of Reference, and the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF).

Evaluation and Assessment Skills

2-3 weeks

Learn how to conduct occupational profiles, perform activity analysis, administer standardized assessments (e.g., COPM, FIM, AMPS), and interpret evaluation data to guide evidence-based intervention planning.

Intervention Strategies Across Practice Areas

3-4 weeks

Explore core intervention approaches: therapeutic activity, compensatory strategies, adaptive equipment prescription, environmental modification, education and training, and advocacy. Apply these across physical rehabilitation, pediatrics, and mental health settings.

Specialized Practice Areas

3-4 weeks

Dive deeper into specialized OT areas: hand therapy, sensory integration, driver rehabilitation, low vision, assistive technology, ergonomics, and school-based practice. Understand the unique evaluation and intervention methods for each specialty.

Evidence-Based Practice and Research

2-3 weeks

Develop skills in reading and appraising research literature, applying evidence to clinical decision-making, understanding research designs commonly used in OT, and integrating best evidence with clinical expertise and client values.

Fieldwork, Certification, and Professional Development

Ongoing (6-12 months for fieldwork)

Prepare for Level I and Level II fieldwork experiences, study for the NBCOT certification exam, understand licensure requirements, and explore continuing education and advanced certifications (CHT, SCLV, BCP). Develop a plan for lifelong professional growth.
