Learn Common Wordy Phrases

1 week

Memorize the most frequently tested wordy phrases and their concise equivalents: 'due to the fact that' = 'because,' 'in order to' = 'to,' 'at this point in time' = 'now,' and 20+ others.

Practice Identifying Redundancy

1 week

Work through sentences containing redundant pairs (free gift, past history, final outcome) and practice identifying which word can be cut without losing meaning.

Master Verb-Noun Conversions

1 week

Practice converting wordy noun phrases back to verbs: 'made the decision to' = 'decided to,' 'gave an explanation of' = 'explained.' This is one of the highest-frequency SAT editing patterns.

Practice Active-Passive Conversion

1 week

Identify passive voice constructions and convert them to active voice. Notice how active voice is almost always shorter and more direct.

Study Sentence Combining Techniques

1-2 weeks

Practice merging short sentences into longer, more efficient ones using coordination, subordination, appositives, and participial phrases.

Apply the Shortest-Correct-Answer Strategy

1-2 weeks

Work through 30+ SAT concision questions. For each, compare all four options and select the shortest one that preserves meaning and grammatical correctness. Verify that no essential information is lost.

Edit Your Own Writing

Ongoing

Apply concision techniques to your own essays, emails, and assignments. Practice cutting 20-30% of your word count without losing meaning. This builds the editing instinct that the SAT tests.
